The calls for admission to the Higher Education and Study Schools of the Italian Ministry of Culture for Restorers of cultural heritage have been published by the Istituto centrale per il restauro (ICR), with Schools in Rome and Matera, the Istituto centrale per la patologia degli archivi e del libro (ICPAL) in Rome and the Opificio delle pietre dure (OPD) in Florence.
Three public calls for applications of thirty students to the five-year diploma courses, equivalent to the master’s degree in conservation and restoration of cultural heritage (LMR/02), qualifying to the profession of Restorer of cultural heritage in Italy, are open. In fact, according to the current legislation, the achievement of the qualification and the relative professional qualification are necessary to carry out any restoration intervention on the Italian cultural heritage.
The places available are divided as follows by Institutes and professionalizing training courses (PFP):
- 20 at the Istituto centrale per il restauro (ICR) of which 5 in the School of Rome in the PFP 1: “Stone materials and derivatives; decorated architectural surfaces ”, 10 in the School of Matera in the PFP 2: “Wooden or textile painted artefacts; Sculpted wooden artefacts; furniture and wooden structures; Artefacts of processed, assembled and/or painted synthetic materials”, 5 in the School of Rome in the PFP 4: “Ceramic, glass and organic materials and artefacts; Metal and alloy materials and artefacts”. Deadline: 4 August 2021.
- 5 at the Istituto centrale per la patologia degli archivi e del libro in the PFP 5: “Book and archive material. Paper and parchment artefacts. Photographic, cinematographic and digital material”. Deadline: 25 July 2021.
- 5 at the Opificio delle Pietre dure in the PFP 3: “Textile and leather materials and artefacts”. Deadline: 18 July 2021.
Admission criteria: five-year upper secondary school diploma or four-year upper secondary school diploma plus supplementary year or equivalent qualification if obtained abroad, held before the start of the courses; physical fitness for the activities that the course entails; enjoyment of civil and political rights; knowledge of the Italian language.
The Higher Education and Study Schools of the Italian Ministry of culture are based on an extremely effective model, recognized both in Italy and abroad, which combines training, research and professional practice within the various laboratories and important restoration sites.
The limited number of students admitted to the courses guarantees personalized attention from the professors and the possibility of working on cultural heritage, integrating the application methodological part with internships and specialist seminars.
At the end of the five-year course, graduates will be in possession of scientific knowledge of the materials and of the various conservation problems for the specific area chosen, they will be able to operate in all phases of restoration and conservation of cultural heritage. Furthermore, since the course qualifies for the profession, they will be included in the list of Restorers of cultural heritage of the Italian Ministry of culture (https://professionisti.beniculturali.it/restauratori).
