“Open Restoration” in the Church of Santa Marta al Collegio Romano
TheCentral Institute for Restoration in collaboration with the School of Cultural Heritage and Activities Foundation and the Directorate General for Education, Research, and Cultural Institutes, is organizing training days on “Open Restoration” in the Church of Santa Marta al Collegio Romano. From abandonment to renewal.
The Open Restoration project was launched on 24 October 2017 in the Church of Santa Marta al Collegio Romano; entrusted to the ICR in order to reopen the site to the public on an ongoing basis, adapting the environment in the form of a restoration workshop. A space where residents, students, and travellers can enter and follow the stages of restoration directly.
While the idea of showing restoration work to the public is not new, the innovation of this project lies in its ongoing nature and its real usefulness, both for the monument and for the objects chosen from time to time. These include the frescoes in the chorus and the stuccoes of the counter-façade and the first bay of the church’s nave; the detached frescoes by Domenichino from Palazzo Farnese; a group of 7000 fresco fragments and stuccoes from the complex of the so-called “Villa of the Baths of painted stuccoes of Tor Vergata” (1st century CE).
