The Directorate General for Education, Research and Cultural Institutes promotes the first edition of the prize competition entitled: “From Alpha to Zeta – The new generations tell the story of the Man of Altamura”, established by the Regional Directorate of Puglia Museums and by National Archaeological Museum of Altamura, on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of its discovery.

The Altamura Man is a human skeleton that belonged to an example of Homo Neanderthalensis, which lived between 180,000 and 130,000 years ago, discovered in the first days of October 1993 at inside the karst cavity of Lamalunga. The Neanderthal specimen, chronologically set at around 150,000 years ago, is the most complete ever discovered and probably the oldest representative of this species.

The competition is aimed at schools of all levels throughout the entire national territory - nursery schools, primary, lower and upper secondary schools - who will be able to participate as a school or through one or more classes.

You have time until December 3to submit a graphic work, a written text or a multimedia product (video, reel or podcast) on the life and/or crucial phases of the Man of Altamura.

Following the evaluation of the works, the awards ceremony will be held on December 18, 2023 on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the First Citizen Conference held in Altamura on 18 December 1993 when the city learned for the first time the details of the extraordinary discovery.
