The Archeo-Cuba project continues its mission in Italy: archaeology and environmental sustainability

As part of the project Archeo-Cuba: archaeology and environmental sustainability for territorial cooperation to combat climate change – funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) Call for proposals “Territorial Entities 2019” – the Directorate-General for Education, Research and Cultural Institutes of the Ministry of Culture is participating in the latest mission to Italy of the Cuban delegation together with the project partners. The mission is carried out in collaboration with the Circeo National Park and the NGO ARCS.

The Archeo-Cuba project, launched in 2021, aims to increase knowledge and awareness of the natural and historical territory of the target areas in the sites between Cuba and Italy, with the aim of enhancing the related training and dissemination offers of the respective places.

The project has revealed great potential for analysis and practices by offering a synoptic and overlapping reading of the historical and natural aspects, thus opening up to numerous paths of sustainable planning and contrast to climate change, with a specific focus on artistic and cultural heritage.

The mission program

The calendar of planned activities of this mission represents the last segment of the project's programming, with a set of activities aimed at promoting reflections and comparisons, even practical ones, on the themes of sustainable management and enhancement of sites of archaeological-historical value in naturalistic contexts of high value, under many aspects. A reflection on the theme of re-granting will also be proposed, on the value of international cooperation for Italian and Cuban public bodies also in relation to the environmental crisis and climate change.

From 6th to 9th April 2025, among the planned activities, there will be many opportunities for discussion and round tables on the following topics:

  • The Archaeological-Historical System of the Circeo District: From the Excavations to the Parco Diffuso – illustration of the system of cultural heritage in the Circeo District
  • Sustainability and Cooperation – Lectio Magistralis by Prof. Francesco Corvaro (Special Envoy of the Italian Government for Climate Change)
  • Sustainability, cooperation and institutions. The Archeo-Cuba model – round table coordinated by the architect Maria Adelaide Ricciardi (MiC – DGERIC)
  • Circeo district chi@ma cuba: geotechnology to know, plan and enhance – thematic meeting

There are many visits to historical and archaeological sites present in the territory of the Municipality of San Felice Circeo and surrounding areas, such as: the Circeo promontory and prehistoric caves, the historic centre of the Municipality of San Felice Circeo and the archaeological area of ​​the Four Winds, Villa of Domitian, Circeo National Park and Park Museum.

The project partners are: Municipality of San Felice Circeo (Proposing body), ARCS Arci Culture Solidali, Department of Environmental Biology – Sapienza University, General Directorate of Education, Research and Cultural Institutes of the Ministry of Culture, Foundation School of Cultural Heritage and Activities, Oficina del Conservador de la Ciudad de Matanzas (OCCM), Oficina del Historiador de la Ciudad de la Habana (OHcH).
