Young European Heritage Makers Competition 2024: Italian projects selected

The two semi-finalist projects for Italy of the Young European Heritage Makers competition have been selected. The competition on cultural heritage aimed at school-age children and young people from the countries participating in the European Heritage Days (GEP), promoted by the Council of Europe and coordinated in Italy by the General Directorate of Museums in collaboration with the Directorate General for Education, Research and Cultural Institutes of the Ministry of Culture.

The twenty-eight projects competing for Italy were evaluated by the commission set up by the two Directorates General involved. The originality of the subjects and the narration, the graphic rendering, the European symbolic value, the adherence to the theme of the GEP 2024 are some of the parameters taken into consideration.

The projects in the semi-finals

The project selected for the 6-11 years category Santa Maria del Riposo in Tuscania: a home for everyone!. Presented by mentors Lorenzo Mantovani and Romina Laurito of the Educational Services and Training Office of the Lazio Regional Directorate of National Museums and carried out with children at the National Archaeological Museum of Tuscania.

The project selected for the 11-17 years category the project with the highest score is, on the other hand, Via Mare e il Parco. Focused on the relationship with the Archaeological Park of Herculaneum, the project is presented by the mentor Maricarmen Pepe and implemented by the Ragazzi di Via Mare.

The final award ceremony

In February 2025, The European Council will check the semi-finalist works from the European countries participating in the initiative. Finally, in March, the two winning projects will be presented with an online ceremony. The winning group for the 11-17 year old category will be awarded with a visit to Strasbourg organised by the Council of Europe in May 2025, while the children in the 6-11 year old category will receive a GEP gadget kit.

The next edition will be in September, in conjunction with the 2025 edition of the GEP.
