Responsibilities of the Directorate General for Education, Research, and Cultural Institutes regarding Professional Profiles in Cultural Heritage

The Directorate has authority regarding professional profiles in cultural heritage, and in particular:

it oversees the maintenance and updating of professional lists of cultural heritage restorers and restoration technicians and the formation of lists of professionals able to carry out actions on cultural property, referred to in article 9-bis of the Code of Cultural Heritage and Landscape.

Without prejudice to the competencies of operators in already regulated professions, the operational actions of safeguarding, protection, and conservation of cultural heritage as well as those related to the promotion and use of the assets themselves, referred to in Titles I and II of the second part of the code, are entrusted to the responsibility and implementation, according to their respective competencies, of archaeologists, archivists, librarians, demographic and ethnographic anthropologists, physical anthropologists, cultural heritage restorers and assistants, experts in diagnostics and applied science and technology for cultural heritage and art historians, possessing adequate training and professional experience.

It oversees procedures of accreditation for training institutions for restoration professions.

It also prepares and oversees the updating of the list of professionals qualified to prepare archaeological assessment documents in the preliminary design of public works (preventive archaeology) and the list of honorary inspectors.

National directories of professionals

Following the publication in the Gazzetta Ufficiale of the D.M. 244, dated 20 May 2019 Regulations concerning the procedure for the formation of national lists of archaeologists, archivists, librarians, demographic and ethnographic anthropologists, physical anthropologists, experts in diagnostics and applied science and technology applied to cultural heritage, and art historians, who meet the requirements identified in accordance with Law 22 July 2014, n. 110 (Amendment to the code of cultural heritage and landscape, as set forth by Legislative Decree n. 42 of 2004, regarding cultural heritage professionals, and the establishment of national lists of these professionals), permanent notices have been published for the listing of each profile, and can be consulted here: NATIONAL DIRECTORIES OF PROFESSIONALS
