The Young European Heritage Makers Competition competition has sterted, the competition on cultural heritage revolt to children and young people of school age from countries adhering to the European Heritage Days (GEP), promoted by the Council of Europe and coordinated in Italy by the General Directorate of Museums and by the General Directorate of Education, Research and Cultural Institutes of the Ministry of Culture.

The initiative, launched on the occasion of the GEP 2023 on the theme InViTA Heritage, aims to bring closer younger people to the Italian cultural heritage. Children and young people are asked to tell with an image and a short text a material/immaterial/digital testimony of the cultural heritage of their territory, explaining what its meaning is for the community of reference.

Participation and selection methods

Two age groups can participate, organized into groups:

  • children born between 2012 and 2017 (6-11 years old)
  • young people born between 2006 and 2011 (11-17 years old)

Each group must be followed, in the creation of their project, by an adult mentor (a professional who works in contact with young people - teachers, educational services, librarians, museum teams) who will coordinate the activities without intervening on the process of exploration of heritage by children/young people.

The mentor will have to:

  • Contact your national GEP Coordinator, involving a groups of children or young people and organize an activity focusing on the question "What is your European cultural heritage for you?";
  • Present the results of the activity through a graphic work accompanied by a short descriptive text or a video of maximum 5 minutes;
  • Upload the group's presentation to the European Heritage Days website.

The mentors will have to upload the works directly digitally by February 18, 2024.

A MiC commission will proceed with the approval and publication of the projects deemed suitable, with their evaluation and, finally, will decree an Italian finalist for each age group by March 2024 . In May 2024 the winning projects from the participating countries will be announced and the winners in the 11-17 age group will travel to Strasbourg to visit the headquarters of the Council of Europe.
