"One hundred years of education, two hundred years of Braille... a precious heritage!" conference on National Braille Day 21 February 2025

For the National Braille Day on 21 February 2025, the General Directorate for Education, Research and Cultural Institutes of the Ministry of Culture participates in the conference One hundred years of education, two hundred years of Braille... a precious heritage! at the University of Catania.

The initiative, organized by the Catania section of the Italian Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired and the University of Catania, celebrates two anniversaries: the 200th anniversary of the birth of the Braille writing and reading system and the 100th anniversary of the "School of Method for Educators of the Blind" founded in Rome thanks to Augusto Romagnoli, author of the first special pedagogy text.

The conference

On the morning of 21 February, after the institutional greetings, there will be speeches on: inclusive education, Braille as a practice of inclusion, the figure and the method adopted by Prof. Romagnoli, accessibility and social inclusion, the importance of the Territorial Support Centres (CTS), the activities of the Visual Rehabilitation Centre of the Italian Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired and national and international inclusion policies.

The afternoon opens with a first workshop on the communication and inclusion of visually impaired children with multiple disabilities. In the second workshop "Museum accessibility: research perspectives" the DGERIC official Elisabetta Borgiareports on the topic before the debate with the sector operators. The day ends with an in-depth study of the accessibility path at the Museum of Sicilian Knowledge and Mirabilia.
