DGERIC on a mission to Cuba as part of the Arqueo-Cuba project: archeology and environmental sustainability

As part of the Arqueo-Cuba project: archeology and environmental sustainability for territorial cooperation to combat climate change (AID012314/01/7) – financed by Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) “Territorial authorities 2019” tender – the Directorate General for Education, research and institutes cultural workers of the Ministry of Culture participates in a new mission to Cuba together with the project partners.

The mission program

21 November: the Italian delegation of the project partners participates in the presentation of the first results of Arqueo-Cuba on the occasion of the first international congress of Cuban archeology (Matanzas, 21-23 November 2023) at theOficina del Conservador de la Ciudad de Matanzas.
The architect. Maria Adelaide Ricciardi and Dr. Giovanni Salerno with a speech entitled Botánica y zonas arqueológicas. Parque Appia Antica (Roma) y Cuba: comparando experiencias in which they present the results of the analysis of the target site ofCayo Blanco in parallel with the management strategies in the Appia Antica Archaeological Park .

24 novembre: sopralluogo della delegazione agli scavi del sito precolombiano La Canada a Matanzas.

November 25: presentation of the contribution Arqueo-Cuba: Arqueo-Cuba: Trasferencia tecnologica y estudios etnobotanicos aplicados a las investigaciones arqueological on the occasion of the XXV Semana de la Cultura Italiana en Cuba (17-27 November 2023) organized by the Italian Embassy in Havana . The intervention focuses on the development of management plans and the consolidation of a strategic vision that favors the fight against climate change in archaeological areas and parks thanks to technological transfer, three-dimensional recording of contexts and artefacts, and ethnobotanical studies .

November 27: inspection of the sites of Guasabacoa II and Cayo Blanco in Havana Bay.

The project partners are: City of San Felice Circeo (sponsoring entity), ARCS Arci Culture SolidarityDepartment of Environmental Biology – Sapienza University, the Directorate General for Education, Research, and Cultural Institutes of the Ministry of Culture, School of Cultural Heritage and Activities Foundation, Oficina del Conservador de la Ciudad de Matanzas (OCCM), Oficina del Historiador de la Ciudad de la Habana (OHcH).
