Restorers of cultural heritage: online calls for admission to the MiC Schools

i have been published calls for admission at Schools of higher education and study of the Ministry of Culture for Restorers of Cultural Heritage at: Central Institute for Restoration (ICR), with offices in Rome and Matera, Central Institute for Archives and Book Pathology (ICPAL) of Rome and Opificio delle Pietre Dure (OPD) from Florence.

There are three public competitions for the admission for the 2021-2022 academic year of a total of thirty students to the five-year diploma courses, equivalent to the single-cycle master's degree in conservation and restoration of cultural heritage (LMR/02), enabling to the profession of Restorer of Cultural Heritage. Pursuant to current legislation, in fact, the achievement of the educational qualification and the relative professional qualification are necessary to carry out any restoration intervention on the Italian cultural heritage.

The places available are divided as follows by Institutes and vocational training courses (PFP):

  • 20 for the Central Institute for Restoration of which 5 at the Rome office in PFP 1: “Stone materials and derivatives; decorated surfaces of architecture”,
    10 at the Matera headquarters in PFP 2: “Manifacts painted on wooden and textile support; wooden carved artifacts; wooden furnishings and structures; processed, assembled and/or painted manufactured articles and synthetic materials”, 5 at the Rome office in PFP 4: “Ceramic, vitreous, organic materials and artifacts; materials and artifacts in metal and alloys”. Questions deadline: August 4, 2021.
  • 5 for the Central Institute for Archives and Book Pathology in PFP 5: “Library and archival material. Paper and parchment artifacts. Photographic, cinematographic and digital material”. Questions deadline: July 25, 2021.
  • 5 for the Opificio delle Pietre dure in PFP 3: “Textile and leather materials and products”. Questions deadline: July 18, 2021.

Requirements and training model

Admission requirements: five-year or four-year upper secondary education diploma plus supplementary year or equivalent qualification if obtained abroad, held before the start of courses; physical suitability for the activities that the professional training course entails; enjoyment of civil and political rights; for foreign citizens, knowledge of the Italian language.

The Higher Education and Study Schools of the Ministry are set up on an extremely effective model, recognized both in Italy and abroad, which combines training, research and the practice of the profession within the various laboratories and important restoration sites .

The limited number of students admitted to the courses guarantees personalized attention from the teachers and the possibility of working on cultural heritage, integrating the applied methodological part with internships and specialist seminars.

At the end of the training course, graduates will possess scientific knowledge of materials and of the various conservation problems for the specific field chosen, they will be able to operate in all phases of the restoration and conservation of cultural heritage. Furthermore, being the course qualifying for the profession, they will be included in thelist of restorers of cultural heritage of the Ministry of Culture (https://professionisti.beniculturali.it/restauratori).
