DG-ERIC's commitment to the sustainable development goals
As part of its mission, the Ministry of Culture is committed to working toward the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), conscious of the fact that the conservation of cultural heritage is essential for sustainable development.
The Directorate General for Education, Research, and Cultural Institutes has requested that all MiC institutions follow the best practices implemented or planned at individual sites with the circular dated 12 October 2021, n.29 on “Sustainability in processes and projects of conservation and restoration based on the 2030 Agenda”.
4 – QUALITY EDUCATION
Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
Cultural Heritage Education as education for material and immaterial safeguarding, as well as conservation, development of knowledge, meaning traditions, skills, and concrete know-how. Implementation of courses and training in Sustainability; from administrative procedures to the management of sites and places of culture, field schools and workshops in pilot sites dedicated to sustainable aspects.
7 – RENEWABLE ENERGY
Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.
Planning and implementation of plants powered by renewable energy, compatibility, and viable proposals in heritage in the field of restoration, regarding know-how and best practices, keeping in mind that one of the main goals of increasing the share of renewable energy in Italy should be the target of 30% of end consumption by 2030.
9 – INDUSTRY, INNOVATION, AND INFRASTRUCTURE
Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.
Digitalization of cultural heritage; increased remote use offerings; monitoring systems; removal of architectural and sensory barriers; energy efficiency reporting; development and monitoring of more sustainable local transport.
11 – SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES
Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.
Study, knowledge, and management of the impact of cultural sites and institutions from an environmental, economic, and social point of view, paying special attention to ensuring that activities around heritage have a low impact. Areas of application include: site accessibility, historical centres, monuments and sustainable mobility; green redevelopment processes.
12 – RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION
Ensure sustainable production and consumption patterns.
Sustainable management of materials, starting from selection and purchase, to disposal. Green purchasing and GPP (Green Public Procurement). In addition to the obligations under the implementation of the new Procurement Code (D.lgs 50/2016), since 2020 the MATTM has also published the technical-specialist pathway to implement GPP in public administrations.
13 – CLIMATE ACTION
Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.
Application of Minimum Environmental Criteria (CAM) Building and use of energy-environmental protocols – such as Leed, Breeam, etc. -, to verify the design and construction process of the work, from a market perspective for “green buildings”.
17 – PARTNERSHIP FOR THE GOALS
Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.
Inter-institutional collaborations on research projects or projects on common objectives regarding the knowledge and safeguarding of cultural heritage constitute the base for shared actions aimed at education and research in the field of cultural heritage and its sustainability.
