CARICOM Pilot Project

Last updated: 28/03/23

The CARICOM Pilot Project is a pilot training initiative for the protection and management of the cultural heritage of CARICOM countries (Caribbean Community and Common Market).

The Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities - Directorate General of Education and Research, based on a convention signed on 26/11/2016 with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Directorate General for Development Cooperation (now the AICS, Italian Agency for Development Cooperation) is the project’s executing agency.

MiBAC provided the Italian Cooperation with highly qualified professionals from the Ministry and its institutes, through a series of international training paths to share best practices in cultural heritage protection with countries that, because of their geographic and climatic position are particularly vulnerable, with a view to the gradual inclusion of the cultural aspect in all the institutional actions of the target countries and the reinforcement/creation of entities responsible for cultural heritage management and protection in those countries.

Since MiBAC had already planned a broad international training offering through International Training Projects for the three-year period of 2016-2018, it was determined in consultation with CARICOM countries to draw on this offering, with special reference to courses in cultural heritage protection and combating illicit trafficking conducted by the Carabinieri Command for Cultural Heritage Protection and by Institute of Conservation and Restoration, given the interest and primary importance of these topics for the project’s target countries.
