The “Ad Templum Pacis” Project

Integrated project for the management, use, and promotion of Villa Silvestri-Rivaldi in via del Colosseo in Rome

Entities involved

The Directorate General for Education and Research, in partnership with the Special Superintendency for Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape in Rome, the Institute for Conservation and Restoration, School of Specialization in Monument Restoration at the University ‘Sapienza’ of Rome (with plans to extend to other offices).

Description of the project

The project calls for the creation of an integrated plan for the management, use, and promotion of Villa Silvestri-Rivaldi in Rome, in the area of the Imperial Fora, using new technologies to serve active training projects at field schools for professionals able to carry out actions in the field of cultural heritage.

The following activities were initiated in 2018:

  • Field school of the School of Specialization in Monument Restoration at the University “Sapienza” in Rome. The worksite enabled photographic and architectural surveys of the interior and exterior of the compendium, and also featured operational examples of applying traditional mortars and natural earth-based colouring (June 2018)
  • Cantiere-scuola dell’Istituto Superiore per la Conservazione e il Restauro. Il cantiere ha interessato in particolare la Sala delle Colonne, con rilievi fotografici e saggi stratigrafici degli apparati decorativi, oltre al ninfeo maggiore del Cortile degli Uccelli, detto di San Francesco, per gli interventi di rimozioni di piccoli apparati radicali con successivi trattamenti e preconsolidamento delle decorazioni murarie  (settembre – ottobre 2018)
  • Initiation of graduation theses of four students in the Faculty of Architecture, Master’s degree course in Architecture (Restoration) at the University ‘Sapienza’ of Rome, aimed at survey using laser scanner technologies and digital photogrammetry, structural studies, in-depth art historical study of the decorative elements prior to restoration (frescoes and wooden ceilings), design proposal (starting in October 2018)

In 2019, field schools of the School of Specialization in Monument Restoration of the University ‘Sapienza’ of Rome and the Institute for Conservation and Restoration followed. At the same time, other field schools were opened, involving the Engineering faculty of Roma Tre University and the Master’s in Cultural Heritage Management of Roma Tre University.
